Incrementing by 1 based on value of another cell

Hello,

I apologize if this has been answered a billion times already - but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

I've a value in Column A that is <1 but occasionally goes >1.
In column B I'd like to start a counter at 1 and increment when the value goes above 1 (and retain as it goes).
Thus, Column B is 1 for n cells, and when Column A goes >1, Column B increments to 2 for n cells, increments to 3 etc etc.

Not sure I'm following. So going down Column A, you have values that are mostly <1 but occasionally exceed 1. Let's say in A3, A12, A20
In B, do you want a single cell to increment as you add data (i.e. count the number of times Col A exceeds 1) OR
do you want; in B3, 1. in B12, 2 and in B20 3 (Do you want all intermediate cells blank or 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2 etc?
OR something else?

All intermediate cells need to contain the incremented number 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2.
