Unhappy using IF function in conjuction with SUM -- Help!!

    hi everyone,

I have been trying to create a formula that calculates the running cash balance and has an IF function for the formula to NOT print the balance if there is nothing in Revenue or Expense.

I tried to use quotation marks but I seem to be missing something.

    Reference: Balance on E column

Could any of you guys take a look and see if you can figure out why it isn't working?

    thanks in advance!!

this is what the assignment says verbatim:

In cell E5, create a formula that calculates the cash balance. (6 points)
    11. Add an IF function to your formula to not print the balance is there is nothing in Revenue or Expense. HINT: In your IF statement you can use quotes around a blank space to not display anything in the cell. (8 points)

the formula should be able to distinguish when to use the revenue or expense so the balance is reflected accurately and in addition to that, not to print anything if there is nothing in revenue or expense without giving an error message. At least that's how I understand it ...

no, I am required to also have an IF statement -- though it looks like that would solve the first part of the equation

Add an IF function to your formula to not print the balance what does that mean ? print? print where or does it mean not show in cell?
"there is nothing in Revenue or Expense" is that either are blank or both blank?
this is not worded very well as a question because if its either the whole lot would be blank

I agree - part of the reason why this question is quite confusing to me as well. I am assuming that if both were to be blank, it wouldn't cause a #value in the balance cell for that particular row?

    Try this in E5:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.

    Drag down to E39
this will keep the rows without data from displaying anything in E, but as you add information to the next rows, it will show up in column E

    Hope this helps
