    Conditional formatting with multiple criteria

I have created a table listing baseball games for the year showing total wins vs. losses for multiple teams. A winning season is baes on the total WINS being greater than the total LOSSES for the year. I created a formula to highlight the wins as: =SUM(C1>D1) for cells =$C$36:$D$47.

This works and highlights my winning teams.

However when I apply the same rule: =SUM(C1<D1) for cells =$C$36:$D$47.

but change the greater than to less than to highlight my losses there is a glitch and the two formulas omit each other.

Am I totally off base as I just want to highlight certain cells?

    Thanks,
    Boxty123

PS. I attached my excel spreadsheet and the location of the area I am working on is under the second tab at the bottom labeled homework2. Then scroll to the bottom and see problem 9)

Hi Boxty and welcome to the forum. I don't think anyone here is going to do your homework for you. Why not take a stab at it and come back with specific questions if you get stuck.

The correct formula should be =SUM($C36<$D36) instead of =SUM(C1<D1) (Watch the dollar sign too) since you are evaluating your data based on table $C36:D48.

DAY92 So you are saying my problem is that I labeled my file inappropriately. So you would have looked at it and not judged if I labeled it xyz file?

I learn by example and have searched for this answer under conditional formatting for a few hours. I also can comprehend excel and mathematical functions when they are explained. I am not sure why you even reply to a thread with judgmental comments. I know I have better things to do, but I did feel the need to reply to you as you have stated a bias that is simply not true of my reasoning for posting here. I am looking for help so I can understand. I am not looking for the easy way out. Just to be clear, thanks.

Oh and just to add, I did have a specific question if you bothered to read my post. You are being judgmental for what reason? I am here as anyone else to ask for help on an issue. If I was in the working world and had an issue with a format or function and I came here to this forum to get help, then when I received my answer should I then pay that person for their services as they would have helped me in something I was essentially working for? Just some questions to consider before you rush to conclusions?
