Question Data Validation Drop Down Boxes (List) - Values Keep Duplicating

    Hi there,

Thank you for having me in the forum and thanks in advance for what will be an onslaught of very basic questions on how to work with Excel - I am aware of the stickies and will be reading them as religiously as my schedule allows; a new career of mine is heavily reliant on Excel and I have been looking to learn more about it before this new role anyway.

After that quick introduction, here is my problem:

    - I have a drop down list of several itmes
    - After I select: Data > Data Tools > Data Validation > List style > Select the source
    - I change the value of one of the drop down lists to another and, it changes as expected - unfortunately the original value in the drop down box has disappeared from the list completely, and I am unable to change back to the original value.

If this is poorly explained, let me know and I will clarify and do my best to provide screenshots.

    Many thanks,
    CJoQ

If you overwrite one of the values in the validation list then it will obviously not be available any longer.
You would have to add a new value rather than overwrite one if you still need the old value too.

    Perhaps I've misunderstood you though...

Spencer, many thanks for flagging up how badly I have explained this!

I select a different value from the drop down list, I am therefore not overwriting anything.

    Say my drop box contans:
    - Hat
    - Scarf
    - Glasses
    - Boot

If the cell begins with 'Hat' and I then select 'Boot', the next time I use the drop down box, Hat has disappeared.

    Hopefully this clears things up?

Do you have the scroll bar to the right of the list when you select Boot?
If so, slide it upward and perhaps Hat will appear?

If not, post an example workbook and I'll look at it from there.
