# Formula for Replacing Codes Indicating Geographic Area with Actual Name of Area

1. ## Formula for Replacing Codes Indicating Geographic Area with Actual Name of Area

I have two sheets. On sheet one I have a column of numbers that indicates what geographic area a person lives in. On sheet two I have a column of numbers and the corresponding geographic areas for each number. I want to create a new column on sheet one that gives the name of the geographic area indicated on sheet 2. I'm presuming I can write a formula for this, but I'm an Excel newbie and have no real idea how to go about this. Any help would be much appreciated!

Use VLOOKUP

e.g.

=VLOOKUP(A2,'Sheet2'!A:B,2,0)

copied down.

This looks up the value in A2 of current sheet, finds it in column A of Sheet2, and returns corresponding item from column B.

That was quick. Thanks very much!
