Compiling values based on information in secondary column

This is probably very easy, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it, or even really how to best explain it but ok...

So let's say I have two columns, one with years and one with values. Any year can appear more than once in the first column. What I need is a formula that automatically looks through the column of years for a specific year and when it finds it, it checks what the value next to it is and automatically copies that value. And if a year appears more that once it'll take all those values and add them together. Ehm... I hope that was clear enough...

    Try SUMIF.

    =SUMIF(A:A;D1;B:B)

In D1, type the year that you are looking for.
