If statement problem

Hello all:

Don't know if this is possible, but....

I am looking to have a cell either output a number as a percentage or whole number (currency).

that said if I create a dropdown box that has an if statement tied to it (i.e:=IF(A1="Percentage",...... or A1="Currency"....) how would I make it so that cell A3 is either percentage or currency?

Moreover, if the user opts for either percentage or currency, am I correct by creating 3 cells to perform task (i.e A1 is data entered, A2 is if statement, A3 is conditional answer cell)?
