Using IF to recognize a cell when it contains no data or text at all

Is is possible to have Excel use the IF function to perform a simple math calculation if the reference cell has absoluley nothing in it, just a blank cell. And if the reference cell has ANY text what so ever in it - do another simple calculation.

    Thanks for any help,

    Lester
