Adding or subtracting months from a date formatted cell

Is there a way to add a month for pulling data from the last month, given the default format in Excel (eg. 9/1/2012). So for example If I have a report pulled and today's date is 9/1/2012, I want the data from 8/1/2012 or any month and year before. Let me know if you can help out with this. Thanks.

EDATE function allows you to add or subtract months, e.g. if A1 is a date this gives 1 month earlier

    =EDATE(A1,-1)

a year ago is obviously 12 months so that would be

    =EDATE(A1,-12)
    Audere est facere
