How to fill series of numbers in excel

Hi

Suppose I have data from A1:A55000,and I have to give series of number in a column before sorting. How to do that?

Second thing,I have data from A1:A100000 and there are blank cells between these cells. But I need to select from A1:A100000,at one shot.Is it possible?

Thanks

Hi narendrabr.

Question 1: I'm assuming the series of numbers you want is simply 1,2,3, etc... then there are a couple of ways to do what you want...
1a. In an empty column, say Col. B (insert a column if needed), then in cell B1 enter 1, in cell B2 enter 2... highlight both cells and on the bottom right of the highlighted range, you should see a little solid square, drag this little square to the rest of the cells, or if your column A is filled in, you can just double click this little square and the rest of the numbers should fill in... if this doesn't work, then...
1b. in B1 enter 1, in B2 enter =B1+1... then copy B2 all the way down to the last cell... or drag/double click the little square... one extra step though is that you have to copy, paste special value this new column to remove the formula before you sort...

Question 2: open Go To by pressing the function key F5, then in the Reference box, enter your range of cells...

Let me know if you still need more clarification... I'm sure there are other ways of doing the above, these are just my tried and true methods...

Take care,
Dennis

Type the range in the Name cell

Edit that should be Name Box ->beside the formula bar

for question 2, hit end home. then, if end left (as many times as it takes, or just scroll) to A100000. with A100000 selected, press ctrl home. that should high-light from A100000 to A1
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
