I'm trying to use conditional formatting (in Excel 2003) to format a row of data if column A contains any data at all. I know the formula for this is

="$A1<>0" (assuming you have a range of cells selected)

Now I've linked a group of cells to a second page, using this formula. But it turns out I can't use the same formula in my new page to achieve the same result as it sees the link formula as a value and formats my cells, unwanted.

How can I get conditional formatting to look at the result of the formula and not the fact that its there.

I know this is probably already posted somewhere but for the life of me I can't find it; probably not searching for the right thing.
