How to show yesterdays date without month year.

In cell A1 is the formula "=today()-1", to show yesterdays date which is 17/10/2012.

I wanted B1 to contain the number date in the month (ie: 17) based on date showed in A1.

How do I do this? I have tried "left(A1,2) and it gives 41 and not 17.
