Formula changes within cell automatically

Hi. I entered the following into a cell in a worksheet I did not create:

+4500/9*12

excel automatically changed the formula to read as =500*12

While the answer is still correct, I need the typed values to remain as they were entered in the cell. How do I change the formatting to correct this? When opening a new spreadsheet I do not encounter this issue.
