Question Can you use data or a forumla in the same cell?

    Hello,

I'm looking to find out if its possible to have a cell filled by using a Vlookup formula or allow the user to input data. If that can be done, can that data then run a formula in another cell as another Vlookup?

I'm new to excel (probably apparent from this question) but not to programming so I'm used to IF/ ELSE statements, etc... and therefore I'm prehaps trying to achieve things that can't be done!

    example:
Resource ID Resource Name Resource Role
    00000001 - Someone - Assistant 1
    00000043 - Someone Else - Assistant 2

At the moment I use Vlookup to get the resource name and resource role, using the Resource ID as lookup. This is taken from the resource table stored on a separate sheet.
What I would like to be able to do is to have it so that if someone puts in a Resource name, it will return the Resource ID OR if someone puts in the resource ID it will return the Resource Name.

Is it possible to have a cell that allows either manual data input or a formula?

(this is to try and make the sheet as user friendly as possible as not everyone knows everyone else's ID (Resource ID is primary key))

Many thanks in advance, I hope my questions makes sense!

    regards
    Donna

    No it isn't.

You need OR a helper column OR VBA.

Thank you for your reply, you have probably saved me many hours of trying different things in an attempt to get Excel do something that's not even possible!

Now off to go read up on Helper columns
