    coma separated items

    my data are all in cell A1.they are the four letters of the alphabet e.g. A,B,C,A,D,B,A,C,D,
    My problem is how do i count the number of A,B,C and D .

    You need to describe your worksheet, better yet provide a sample workbook. There are too many alternatives and I suspect there is more to your problem than your explanation suggests.
    Attach a sample workbook.
