    IF-THEN Statements help

I have a workbook that I use for personal financing I have multiple worksheets, one of my work sheets it bills and the other is DATA.

In one of the columns it says OUTSTANDING BALANCE, and in the Second Column it says STATUS. If status is PAID then the row turns green. Now I want to calculate total PAID balance.
So I tried to create and if, then statement like this. =SUMIF(STATUS,PAID,OUTSBAL) (This is what I named the ranges) however it doesn't add the values in the OUTSBAL column, when the status is paid. Is it because I am using a phrase? would it work if I had it with numbers like 1,0??? I hope this isn't too confusing if it is I can do screen shots
