Extending Formulas to lower cells, only extending certain parts of the formula

I was wondering if its possible to extend a formula to lower cells, while keeping certain figures fixed? I'll give an example to try make it clearer

say my original formula was in cell A1 and the formula was "A2+A3+A4".

Now i'd like to extend this formula to cell B1, so i do that and the formula reads "B2+B3+B4"

Instead of this, i want the formula in cell B1 to be "B2+B3+A4"
and then for cell C1 to be "C2+C3+A4" ect.

tryed to make that as clear as i could, hope you can help,
    Thanks

    try this in A1

    Formula: copy to clipboard

    extend across
    Hope this helps

    -Edit-
the $A keeps the last argument referencing the same column, so
B1 would look like =B2+B3+$A4, etc

    Hi Milky,

    welcome to the forum.

    try this is cell A1

dollar sign means absolute reference which will stop the cell reference from moving when you copy the formula down.

    Hi Milky,

As Hyperdude and dredwolf both rightly said, what you need is absolute referencing.

If you want to learn more about relative and absolute referencing, read about it in my article here.
