    Problem with vlookup

    Hi

I am working on a spreadsheet and am having problems with a vlookup. When I try the same basic vlookup on a test spredsheet it works but when I then carry out the same lookup with the real data it does not work.

I have attached my file and I would appreciate it very much if someone would have a look please. You should be able to see what I am trying to do.

    The grading system our school uses goes along the lines of, 1C 1B 1A 2C 2B 2A 3C 3B 3A......8C 8B 8A

Each student has a grade and I want to move them up a grade in the next column. So if a student has a grade of 2A then I want to do a vlookup so that it returns a 3C.

    Thanks again

It seems to work fine, you just need to change your formula in DE2 to this: =VLOOKUP(DD2,$DT$2:$DU$23,2,0) so the range for lookup remains constant, then fill all the way down to DE225.

Also, change the format of the cells in column DE2:DE225 to 'General', otherwise the formula will appear in the cell, instead of the desired result.

First, reformat the cell as "General" (instead of "Text"), then adjust the formula to:
