Sum of rows depending on the adjacent cell

Hey guys,
So I've looked around and tried a bunch of different versions of the =SumIF functions but I can't seem to make this work, so here we go! I need to find the sum of certain values depending on what letter is next to them across one rows. For instance in one row there may be something like this (where the number and letter are in separate columns): 2V 3V 10F 1V I need to find the sum of all the numbers corresponding to the V, so for this example the total would be 6.

Any help would be great!! Thanks in advance!

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook. The workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Hi Cheft,

I hope you don't mind me saying so, but your data layout doesn't lend itself to easy/straightforward calculations. Have a look at the attached, which is laid out slightly differently, so you can then use a SUMIF on a COLUMN, with the individual's name as the criteria. Perhaps this is something you could work with?

BB1972,
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I didn't create the workbook in question and was just given it :-( When I first looked at it I knew it hadn't initially been setup by someone who knew anything about excel or formulas.....thanks for the help anyway! Maybe I can revamp the entire workbook......

No problem. If you're not in a position to change your data layout, just post something along the lines of "has anyone else any ideas?", so that the other forum members are aware that you're still looking for help. More often than not, there is a way to do it, but it might take some more advanced know-how than I have.
