I have a cell with a max function D1=MAX(A2:A100). A2:A100 are dates. If A2:A100 are null the return is 12/30/1899. Is there a way to have today's date returned if all of the values in A2:A100 are null?

How about putting an if statement
=if(max()=0,Today(),max())

Try this:
=if(A2:A100 = "",today(),Max(A2:A100))
