Exclamation Search for a word in a column and extract the word

    Hi guys,

I have a problem which i don't know how to crack,

I have two columns, one column is a list of 11,000 unstructured textual comments (A) and another column is a list of about 50 key words(B). I want to search for the key words in the comments column and if any of the key words match, the matched word should be populated in a separate column (C).

Can anyone help me with this please!

This sounds very similar to a thread I answered yesterday - check out my post #4 in this thread:

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Pete,

Thanks for the pointer, i did actually see your solved solution prior to raising this question. I'm still a novice with regard to formulas and have been trying to crack your solution to suit my requirement but still i'm running into a brick wall. I've attached my xls file for your reference. U will notice that i have a few keywords in Column D which i should parse in Column A,extract and paste the match in B against the row. Hope this helps, and thanks a lot for the prompt reply!

    Cheers!

Re: Search for a word in a column and extract the word

Well here's a slightly different approach. I've put your keywords in row 1 of different columns, starting with C, and then put this formula in C2:

    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.

which can then be copied across and down to suit. This will give you a count of the number of times each keyword can be found in the text in column A.

    Hope this helps.
