Drop down menu addition

Hi Guys
Racking my brains and im really stuck..
I have a tracker i am creating to track waste for our business and have created 2 tables
The first has each managers name and a month to date running total
The second has the day of the month then a drop down box to mark who'se shift it is...
Basically i need to find out how to automatically total the number of shifts per manager so if i select "James" from the menu in table 2 10 times, the first table will say 10 in the total shifts cell.

If I understand you correctly, a COUNTIF formula in column E should work for you. Have a look at the attached....

I figured it out just after posting... and sorry i forgot which site i had posted this on until now!
If you are experienced with excel however i have another problem im trying to work out, ive just posted it in general on the forum
