Counting how many dates in a range fall into this week and last week

I have a spreadsheet column that contains a series of dates and times and would like to know how I can count those that relate to this week and those that relate to last week.

The dates in the column A are:
31/12/2012
01/01/2013
07/01/2013
08/01/2013
06/01/2013
05/01/2013
07/01/2013

and the formula I have tried is below which returns a value of 0:
=COUNTIF(A:A, WEEKNUM(TODAY()))

todays date is 08/01/2013

also I have no idea how I can achieve the Last Week count.

can anyone help me please

Does your week number start on a Sunday or a Monday? i.e. would 6th Jan be counted in this week or last week?
