XIRR range parsing

It seems that Excel 2007 and 2010 XIRR() does not use the standard Excel argument parsing for range. A parenthesis is accepted around the range argument, but an internal comma is not. Therefore a range consisting of the contents of non-contiguous cells cannot be expressed in the usual way. Would anyone like to suggest a workaround?
