    Formula Question - Value Lookup

    Hello Everyone,

Pls refer to the following table.

    Name apple (y/n) laptop
    john y hp
    john y lenovo
    john y apple
    john y sony
    john y asus
    smith n lenovo
    smith n asus
    smith n hp

For a name in the "Name" column, if you find the word apple in the "laptop" column, we need to substitute "Y" in "apple(y/n) column for all occurences of that particular name (in the above example "john"). If there is no occurence, we need to subsitute "N". How do we do this using formulae ?

    Thanks!
    Girish

if your table ranges from A1 through C9 (including header), then you can put the following formula in B2 and drag-fill down:

when i copied your data over, i found that the only instance of "apple" had a trailing space. so, if you don't get a favourable answer at first, check if there are leading / trailing white spaces.

CSE, aka Array aka { }, formulae are confirmed with CONTROL+SHIFT+ENTER.
Replace commas ( , ) with semicolons ( ; ) in formulae, if your locale setting demands.
All good ideas are courtesy resources from this forum as well as others around the web.
