Division of two numbers resulting as hours and minutes

    Hello,

I am using Excel 2003. If I divide 2 numbers then the result should be in hours and minutes.

    For e.g.

    Cell A1 = 12
    Cell A2 = 58

Cell A3 = A2/A1 i.e. A3= 58/12 which results in 4.83 as number. But if I format it as [h]:mm then result comes out as 116:00 which is wrong. I want it should be displayed as 5 hours and 23 min i.e. 5:23.

Can anyone help in this case.

    Thank you in advance.

    Right click A2 and A3 > format cell > number > custom > enter [hh]:mm
    A2/A1 = 58:00/12 = 04:50

    Is this what you want?

    Thanks Brumbot..

I can not change A2 as [hh]:mm as it's a result of some other calculation. Also if you do 58/12 = 4.83 so I take it as 4 hours and 83 minutes means at the end 5 hours and 23 min. May be I am wrong but as said I can not change A2 to [hh]:mm

    Thanks anyway for the reply.

Re: Division of two numbers resulting as hours and minutes

Actually I am doing the calculation for heating time required.
So the values in cell A1 and cell A2 are result of a calculation.

    (Heater capacity) A1= 12 kW
    (Pt) A2 = 58 kWh

So if you do A2/A1 = 4.83 hours (this result is strainge as in actual it's 5 hours and 23 min) so how to get this.

Re: Division of two numbers resulting as hours and minutes

I think you'll find that 4.83 hours is 4 hours and 50 mins. Since 0.83 is 5/6th. And 5/6ths of an hour is 50 mins. Therefore 4 hours 50 mins. You're getting confused between 60 mins in an hour and decimals out of 100.

In A3 enter: (A2/A1)/24. Format as [hh]:mm. This gives the answer 4 hours 50 mins.
