Conditional Formatting - Use a formular to determine which cells to format

I am new to writing custom rules for cell formatting, so I hope I explain my self clearly. I am looking to set up a rule where based on what is in the H Column ("OS" or "OD") the appropriate cells get highlighted with a green background color. in the F column E.g OS is stated for item 1 in the H column, so the OS cells need to be highlighted with a fill color of green for item 1 (F4 and F6), for item two F7 and F9 needs to have a green background color, item 3 (F11,F13,F15,F17,F19F21), item 4 (F24,F26,F28,F30,F32,F34) etc. I want to set up a rule so this can be automatically done. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Yes totally, thank you.
Can you explain the rule to me?

Which cell did you initially choose?
    Then you:
So you chose - Format only cell that contain
    Cell Value =$H$3

    Chose equal to

Where did you chose applies to?

    Applies to =$F$5:$F$6,$F$3

    Thanks

Sure. It's simple. All you have to do is select the cell you want the conditional formatting. Then select Conditional Formatting and select New Rule. Then, select Format Only Cells that Contain. In the edit section, this is where you choose your parameters. What I did was Cell Value "Equal To" the cell you want it to match. Then select the fill color you want. You can even change the font type, color, etc. Then, copy and paste the "format only" to the cells you want this rule to apply. Since each section has a different rule, you'll have to change the rule to apply to each section. Hope this helps.

Yes thank you, but is there a way to make the rule apply to the whole excel without selecting each cell individually? If I just wanted that cell a color I could individually highlight each cell and just choose a background color, I was hoping there was a way to get all the approriate cells in column F green by one single rule?

Something like. Whenever "OS" is in column H, "OS" in colum F background color is green
    Then
Whenever "OD" is in column H, "OD" in colum F background color is green

    Is this possible?

If column H has the same data in the same section, then all you have to do is apply the format to all of column F. Then, for the cell value, take out the dollar signs. Is this what you're looking for?
