align data by ID# from two different files combined

I have excel 2010.

Two files are combined into one.
They contain a common data element, the ID#.
Sometimes both columns contain the same ID#, sometimes they do not.
Each ID# has additional rows of information associated with that ID#

I want to align the new combined file such that each row in the new file will contain only one ID# along with its associated information along that row.
Sometimes there will be only one ID# in a row as it is unique to one of the imported datasets
Sometimes both files will contain that ID# so it will contain both ID#'s associated information on that row.

I thought I saw something on this forum about it but it involved this gigantic macro basic language stuff and I was lost.

Can't I just do some sort of =lookup if then sort of thing?

Yes you can do it fairly simply by using an =MATCH & =INDEX functions.

Upload a sample workbook that contains some representative rows. Presumably the two files are combined into data in two sheets in a single workbook?
