Question Cateorgise data - If word is in column H, return set value in blank column

    Hi all,

Have been manually processing financial report data each month and have finally thrown in the towel - there has to be a simpler way of automating the bulk of the work each month.. hopefully!

Basically, I get a dump of information from finance which I then catogorise into for example 4 categories: Fixed, Mobile, Variable, Conf. to do my primary analysis.

I manually go through the suppliers at the moment, filtering thousands of lines of data trying to work through it assigning the correct category.

Is there anyway that I can do a lookup or IF formula to try remove the bulk of this manual work?

Any help appreciated! I know that it won't be able to automate all of the lines, but - even if I can run the formula for the top 20 vendors it would take a lot of the work from me.

    Example -
    Technology Account Desc Supplier
    Fixed Phone-Other CHINA MOBILE
    Fixed Phone-Other T-MOBILE
    Fixed Phone-Other VODAFONE
    Fixed Phone-Monthly Bill-Voice VODAFONE
    Fixed Phone-Monthly Bill-Voice Verizon
    Fixed Phone-Monthly Bill-Voice EIRCOM PLC
    Fixed Phone-Monthly Bill-Voice EIRCOM PLC
    Mobile Phone-Monthly Bill-Voice Telestra
    Conf Phone-Monthly Bill-Voice Intercall

    Any help appreciated. Thank you!

Is there a lookup list available based on which the lookup can be performed?

I would have to create one - do you mean create a list of suppliers that I would like to check for?

Yes, how would the formula know which suppliers goes where?

I understand that - I will create a list of course. In the example above there are a few suppliers listed - the last column (it didn't paste the format correctly).

You can have your lookup list as part of your file or keep it in an independent file. The formula can then pick it up from wherever you keep it.

Ok, I am creating a list now for each category.

Can you assist with creating a formula? That is not something I can understand fully though I have tried..

There is quite a long list per category and at the moment I have them in separate sheets in a special excel workbook. Is there a limit or ideal number - is it impossible to have a large list?

Its fine if you have a long list. The vlookup might take some time to get done. You have one value per vendor right?

Hi - yes, one value for each vendor and they are specific to each category.
