I have a formula that I just cannot get to work.
I want to count the number of "yes" in column B.......IF column A is not null

x YES
y YES
c NO
(BLANK) YES
d NO
e YES
ui NO
Should return a value of 3

Try
=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A10<>"")*(B1:B10="yes"))

Try the following:
=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A8<>"="),--(B1:B8="YES"))

Merged Cells (They are the work of the devil!!!)
You would need SUMIFS as you have two conditions. For that you would need Excel 2007 or later.
In Excel 2003 you can use =SUMPRODUCT((A1:A10<>"")*(B1:B10="Yes"))
