    Ranking Dates Chronologically

    Question.xlsx

In the attached spreadsheet, I need a formula to make column "D" return the given values. Basically, as I have it now, column "C" is able to "Count" the # of payments in any given week. The problem arises when a date in column "A" occurs in the same week but is chronologically before a date in a "higher up" cell in column "A" but in the same week. I.E. Payment on 4/22/13 on row 11 is counted after the payment on 4/26/13 on row 9. I need column "D" to count the payment on 4/22/13 before the payment on 4/26. Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks,
    Cooper

    Cooper, welcome to the forum.

    2 questions for you:

    1) Would you not just use Excel's sort facility, to sort the payments (Column A) from oldest to newest?

    2) What logic determines how those values are arrived at? If we don't know how you're calculating the desired number of payments in a given week, we can't help you with a formula to return those values.
    Brendan.

    1) brendan, the file I uploaded is a far simplified version of my full file. I tried the sort function but I have too many other things going on with the data for that function to be applicable.

    2) The logic looks a the payment date, determines which week of the month that falls in (week 1-5 of any given month) and then ranks each payment within that week. The problem is that it cannot rank those dates chronologically within each week.
