How to color-fill blank cells, then once data is entered cell is no-fill

I've been trying to look online but none of the tuts are really helping me. I am using Microsoft Excel 2010

I'm trying to format my spreadsheet. I have a Gross Rate column and a Net Rate column (about 100 rows).

I want to format the spreadsheet so that if there is nothing at all entered in the cells, the cell will be filled with a color. As soon as any data is typed into that cell, I want the cell's fill to be blank (so white).

I've seen this on other spreadsheets but do not know how to accomplish this.

Thank you very much

You can do this with Conditional Formatting.

Your profile says you have 2003, I cant remember exactly where CF is in that ver. but it should be under formatting (i think)

You need to go into CF and select "format cell contents" and select "blank" if that option is there
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

ok same thing...

select the range you want to apply CF to
find CF on the Home tab - styles
select New Rule
select "format cells that contain"
on the pull-down, select BLANKS
