When your sum exceeds 24 hours, it recycles backto zero because it is now a time in the next day (1 day = 24 hours)
To display a "cumulative" time, custom format the formula cell as [h]:mm
Can you show me how and where to put that? (Newbie to excel here)
Highlight the cell with the formula in question.
Right click it - Format Cells
Select Custom
In the box, type in
[h]:mm
Click OK

Check this out - it says to multiply your formula by 24 and make it into general format - it yields 49:
