Automatic Formual Updating not allowed

When I change the setting so that formulas automatically update, the formulas update...once. But the option setting is not actually changed. The automatic update feature is still set to Manual. There does not seem to be any way for me to change the setting to automatic formula update. Any ideas? THANKS!

Re: Automatic Formual Updating not allowed

Are there any macro's/VBA code in the workbook that may be turning 'auto formula calculation' off?
A picture may be worth a thousand words, BUT, a sample Workbook is worth a thousand screenshots!

No, there are no macros or VBA code. The problem happens in every worksheet and file. The same problem happens if I create a new worksheet. Thanks,

    Hi

I looked at your file and played around with a few numbers. The only formulas I can see are in E49 down, and they all changed just fine when I changed any of the values that feed them?
    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

As I suspected, there is nothing wrong with the file. On MY computer, the problem happens with ALL files and ALL formulas. Since the problem is not in the file, any idea on where the problem is? Thanks,

As dred suggested, did you check to see if "manual calc" is selected?

    formula tab, calculation/calc options

Re: Automatic Formual Updating not allowed

Yes. The problem is that after selecting "Automatic," the changes do not take effect. Immediately after exiting from options by clicking "Okay," I can go back to options dialog box and "Manual" continues to be selected by Excel. Excel refuses to change the option.
