How to read formula result for calculation of another formula?

I'm looking into an issue where a spreadsheet is being used as an invoice attached to a barcode scanner. It looks up descriptions and prices based on the item number using vlookup, which in most cases are the 8-12 digits of the barcode. The scanner inputs the entire barcode number, and I was able to strip out the item number using the MID formula. However, when I use the MID command vlookup can't look up the product as it sees the field as the formula rather than its result. How can I make the vlookup look up the result of the MID command rather than the command itself? Thanks.

It's likely Excel is seeing the result of the formula as text instead of a number. Try multiplying by one, like:
