How to count A and AA

Hi All,

I have a series of cells that have grades that range from AA to A, to B, C, D, E, F, G & U.

I can count the numbers of B-U however I cant sort the formula to count AA and A as it just counts all the A's regardless of being in AA or A.

Any ideas or help.

If the grades are in C15:C30

=COUNTIF(C15:C30,"=AA")

variations of this should work fine
