Comparing 2 columns and returning a value of a 3rd column

    Hello everyone,
New to this forum so I apologize in advance if this question has been asked previously. Here goes....

On one sheet I have 400 item numbers that have corresponding categories. For example... item xxxxx in column A, sales category in column B.

On another sheet in the same workbook I have over 3000 item numbers that I need to put a list next to that displays the matching sales category located in column B of the first sheet.

I'm trying to figure out how to write a statement that says if one of the 3000 item numbers match one of the 300 item numbers in column A, then return the value in column B.

    Thanks for the help!

Hi everyone, thanks for all the help but I'm still having trouble figuring this out. I've attached the spreadsheet I'm working with and any help would be appreciated.

If looking at the "12 month Sales" tab, I am trying to get column G (Sales Category) to match the sales category column (column E) that go with the item number column, (Column A), in the "march inventory tab".

I've tried index and match functions but cannot get cell G3 in the 12 month sales tab to return the text of the corresponding item number in the march inventory tab.

    Apologies for being longwinded.
