How are the cells merged (across, down, both)? Can you upload an example of what you have and what you want (go advanced>manage attachments)?

cells are merged down in a column
Like pulling teeth: So if you have the cells merged down a column, the answer is easy.

since they are all merged.
please answer my question. i am waiting
Okay, all kidding aside, let's say you merged sets of two cells going down starting with row 2 (i.e A2:A3) are merged
=INT(ROW(A2)/2) copied down
it is not working.
please help me
Okay, because some of the cells are merged and others are not, Excel won't let you copy and paste all the way down. (This is one of many reasons merged cells are frowned upon).
Here's what I did. I put a 1 in A2
In A3
=MAX(A1:A2)+1
You can copy that formula into all unmerged cells
In A4 (merged with A5)
=A3+1
You can copy that formula into all merged cells.
See attachment.
it is of no use, it will be done manually then. any help by macros VB
