Select a range based on a cell value

I have a spreadsheet where we input data from answers given from an evaluation of sports sessions that the company I work for runs. Just for the sake of this question, lets assume I have two columns. Col A is a list of sports that our clients mentioned that they participate in. Col B is a list of their genders (M,F). How could I select a range that only involves the males and one for females. My main goal is to count how many times each gender participated in each sport. For example I would like to count how many of the females played football. So I would like a formula to count how many times football was mentioned in Col A if the value in col B is "F".
