Link Pictures to a Dropdown List

In the attached "Food Picks" file I think I have everything set up as in the "Show2Pics" file but I am unable to make the connection to a Picture as in the "Show2Pics" file.

When I click on the picture in the second file a formula is displayed in the tool bar and so far I have not been able to make that connection.

Finally, once I got all of the file names fixed it works!

Many thanks to young_86. It took a while but I got it in my thick head.

Re: Link Pictures to a Dropdown List

    hi,
    please see the att.

i do it in a bit different way than in example file, i think easier one.
    i defined range as:
    =IF(Sheet1!$B$3="Dinner";INDIRECT("'Sheet2'!A1");IF(Sheet1!$B$3="Pasta";INDIRECT("'Sheet2'!A2");IF(Sheet1!$B$3="Veggies";INDIRECT("'Sheet2'!A3");INDIRECT("'Sheet2'!A4"))))

    for me its work perfectly.
I hope you mean something like this

    young-86,

    Thank you for your response.

The actual file will contain over 70 pictures so your formula may become quite cumbersome to deal with.

However I am still having the same issue with both methods, namely how is the connection between the picture and the formula made?

When I click on the pictures chosen in either method, a formula is displayed in the formula bar, How do I go about making that connection?

I am sure it is something very simple (if you know how) but I have tried everything in my limited bag of tricks and I am coming up empty each time.

    Thanks,

    Jim O

picture is connected with the range name. To do this you need to select a picture and in formula bar type" =defined_name_of_your_range', and this range is defined in name manager and there is all magic hapend. There you got if and idirect formula connected with your list.
I hope note its got more sense.

    young_86,

Thanks for your time with me and this issue. No need to apologize for your English I have live in the US over 60yrs and I still have problems, besides, if you can put up with my issues with Excel I am sure a slight language issue will be no big deal.

I have attached a file to show more clearly what I am trying to do.

Re: Link Pictures to a Dropdown List

1.enter some text in cells a1 and a2 on sheet2. your pictures should be in cells b1, b2.
    2. select a1:b2 on sheet2
3.go to formulas ribbon and choose "create from selection" (then choose from left)
"4. create new named range in Name manager (in my example name is indir)
-press new, enter name and in reference write =INDIRECT(Sheet1!$B$4)
-(Sheet1!$B$4) this is address where your list is"
    5. selct cell where is one of your picture. Cell not picture. Picture should be smaller than a cell. Eg. B1 from sheet2
    6.copy that cell
    7.go to sheet1
    8. paste special->linked picture
"9.select pasted picture and in formula bar type""=""and_name_of_your_defined_range
    in this example =indir"
10.enter and picture should change when you choose something on the list.

check the att. i hope now its more clearly for you.

Getting closer, but not quite there yet.

I ran into a wall trying to display the actual picture, it just shows the reference.

Re: Link Pictures to a Dropdown List

Still hung up on something. I think I have followed the steps as listed in post #6, but in step 9 when I try to add a formula I keep getting an error "Not a valid reference". I am at a loss as to what I am missing here. Any suggestions?

Re: Link Pictures to a Dropdown List

Their may be a light at the end of the tunnel after all.

I have it working sort of, at least their is sometimes something happening when I select a different name.

However I don't understand why is does not work for all selections. Does it have something to do with the size of the pictures, the formula or something else?

    Thanks
