Formula Auto fill incorrect cell data

    Hi

I can not work out why but my excel is now deciding not to use logic when calculating formulas. I have Auto turned on, and checked all usual things but an example (although simplified) is this:

    Jan calculation is Z1*A1
    Feb calculation should be Z1*A2
    March calculation should be Z1*A3
    and so on

    however I am getting

    Jan calculation is Z1*A1
    Feb calculation Z2*A2
    March calculation Z3*A3

so I understand this could happen if I am only highlighting the first cell as the example - but I can correctly fill 6 cells and then try to drag the autofill and it results in a break in the logic!!!!

A am trying to alter a 5 year budget which means I am manually changing the 1 letter in each formula cell - my god its annoying. It also seems to happen even on another pc when I email it so its catching!!!

Use this for the Jan calculation:

    =Z$1*A1

    and then copy down.

Check in the Help files for Absolute and Relative addressing/referencing.

    Hope this helps.

What does "didn't work" mean exactly?

The $ symbol in front of a row reference (or a column reference) ensures that the row (or column) does not change when the formula is copied down (or across). It is referred to as absolute addressing/referencing, rather than relative addressing - more details in XL Help files.

    Hope this helps.
