check to make sure a column range of dates is in chronological order

I have a range of dates located in a column. I would like to make sure the dates have been input in chronological order. I do not want to sort them since this is a data entry error check. I would like to end up with a message box stating an error and conditional formating of the cell with a fill color (not font color).

    9/1/12
    10/1/12
    11/1/12
    9/1/12
    12/1/12

    Message
Dates are not in chronogical order. Please try again.

    Thanks in advance.

attached is the conditional format portion of it

with message box, Data validation may work but....are you manually data entering it in?
if not then DV would not work

try enter date less than A6 into A7

if you are checking POST data entry or cut and paste then some VBA work would be required

    humdingaling,
Thanks. This works. Had to add an additional conditional formating to account for blanks.

You are right about the VBA. I will consider the Data Validation Approach.
