    Average Minutes Per Hour

I have a spreadsheet with call/radio transmission durations listed. I have converted these times into decimal time, such as 30 seconds = .5, 1 minute 57 seconds = 1.95, etc. I have a file for each month, then a tab inside of that file for each hour of the day. So, everything is already broken down by hour of the day. For example, any call for the month of February in the 6AM hour is on one tab.

To get the average minutes per hour, should I just SUM all of my data in that set and then /60? For example, if my set of data is:

    0.55
    2.29
    0.35
    2.35
    2.28
    0.42
    0.32
    1.4
    3.11
    0.39
    0.36
    2.21
    2.54
    2.52
    1.4

Should I simply SUM that, then divide that number by 60 (60 minutes in an hour)? Or should it be something else since I converted the times to decimal? Should I divide both sides of the decimal by 60? Or am I not making any sense at all?

If you convert them back to time you can use pivot table for the average.

I have the original times. In one column I have the original time, and the column next to it is a function that converts it to decimal time. I had to mine all of this data manually, so I made it where I can express 2 minutes 30 seconds (2:30) as 2.30 in the original time column. The only significance of the decimal value is so I didn't have to hit shift to make a : between minutes and seconds. I'm not familiar with pivot tables....

rcm -- I don't think the average function is what I'm looking for. That would simply give me the average duration, because it would be dividing by the number of entries. Or maybe you're right and I'm making it too complicated. I'm not so sure anymore, really.

I've done a little reading on the pivot table, and I'm not sure that's what I need. I already have a format for presentation and already have the data organized. I just need a calculated field to do the math. More or less, I just need to know which formula I should use. I'm really thinking that with the way I have the data organized, I simply need to divide by days in the particular month that I am working with. I already have the data broken down by month and by hour.

I'm not trying to find the average duration of the calls listed, I'm trying to find the average minutes per hour spent.

    Re: Average Minutes Per Hour

You get better help if you add an excel example, without confidentional information.

Please also add the desired (expected) result.
