    Formula which allows for a change in Column B as a result of Column A

    Hi there, I've been looking for a formula but I can't find one anywhere and I was hoping you could help.
    I have text in Column A and I am trying to write a formula so that if HL is found in column A, then input 2 in Column B.
    Can you help?
    Thanks!

    Do you mean?

    =if(a2="hl",2,"")

    I don't think I've actually thought this through. I have 8 different options
    X = 1
    E = 2
    H = 3
    M=4
    L=5
    HL=6
    W=7
    ND=8

    I'll just have to go down through them all!
    Thanks anyways!

    Is the text on it's own like "HL", or is it mixed with other text like "GTHLF"?

    It's on it's own, but there are 202,500 cells with one of the eight options above in them, so I'm trying to save time!

    That formula just changed the cells to 6, which doesn't correspond to my little code. Never mind guys, thanks for the help!
