Looking for an "either or" formula

Hello, Forgive me if this is obvious and has been posted somewhere else, but I've been scouring the internet and have not found a solution to my problem.

I'm creating a budget worksheet and I'm looking for what I'm calling in my mind an "either or" formula. Let me explain...

I have 3 columns. Column A is for Receipt Total or Cost Per Item. Column B is where you would enter the amount for the Cost Per Item. Column C is where I want to have a formula that sums either the data in just column A or the data in columns A multiplied by B. For example, if the user enters a receipt total in A1 ($5.00), I would like $5.00 to carry over to cell C1. If the user enters a cost per item total in A1 ($5.00) then enters 5 in B1, I would like C1 to carry over =SUMA1*B1 to show a total of $25.00.

Is this something that is possible?

    Any help is kindly appreciated!!!
