HELP! IF statement containing DATES

Hello everyone,

I tried to look around to see if there were anything similar to the problem I am running across, but had no luck.

So I have this formula I am trying to set up. IF a date is entered in LOI Sign Date then the number 1 is automatically inputted into Phase Column, and IF the date entered in Leasing IS GREATER than the date in LOI Sign Date Column, then the number 2 will be automatically placed in Phase column, and IF the date entered in Space Delivery IS GREATER than Lease Sign Date, then the number 3 and so on....

Here is the sample:

Basically I am trying to make the IF formula, but I keep getting the error. I am new at this, and just trying to figure this out.

I have came up with this formula

=IF(C2>DATEVALUE("12/31/2012"),"1","", IF(D2>C2,"2") and I get an error.
