Is it possible to have sub totals work between 2 blanks cells?

On the enclosed sheet I have an example of some sub totals.

Is it possible to enter a formula in the sub total column that would create subtotal values where the is a blank line.

i.e E8 would only total from E7 to E8 because E6 is empty?

What I am trying to do is have this formula in subtotal column and then when it encounters a blank in column D it will sub total from that blank to the next blank down in the column.

So E5 would see a blank on D2 & D6 and then would sum everything in between?

At the moment I am having to go down the column and put the sum formula in every one.

I see that you have formulas in column J.
Then change the formula in cell K3 to:

    =IF(J4=0,IF(SUM(J$2:J3)-SUM(K$2:K2)=0,"",SUM(J$2:J3)-SUM(K$2:K2)),"")

    Thank you.

I see know it was looking for a blank cell rather than a zero value.
