How to Calculate Transit Time In a Report With Different Dates, Times and Locations

    Hi,

I need to calculate transit times in an excel spreadsheet. The data is pulled from a web site as a xls file. This report includes transit times for train shipments. The shipments go through multiple carriers ( up, BNSF, NS...) and so there's multiple transit time points that need to be calculated. The problem is that not all shipments go through the same route and so a simple subtraction from one cell to another will not work for all shipments. I'm currently working down the report, reguring out shipment by shipment. The report is VERY long and I'm pretty sure that there's an easier way to do this. Could anyone help me with this?

    Thanks very much
    Rgds

You could set up codes for each transit point and combine them to form a route code. For example, if a shipment went from point A to point L and had to go through transit points D and J on the way the code would be ADJL and if the shipment went directly the code would be AL. This could be set up in a table with the appropriate transit times pre-calculated and entered into the column right of the codes. Then all that would be required is a lookup of the code for the shipment and the transit time would be presented to you.

It would take time to set this up but once established would be very quick to yield results.
