    Vlookup with wildcard

I have 2 columns of data

    A) ID column in the following format - Eg: XYZ-AB1488-DF-5
    B) ID column with extra characters in between - Eg: XYZ-AB1488KKK-DF-5

I need to vlookup the values in column A to find the match in col B with extra characters in between.

    Method I adopted.

    Split col A into 2

    Eg :

    A1
    XYZ-AB1488

    B1
    DF-5

used formula - =vlookup("*"&A1&"*"&B1&"*",Sheet2B:B,1,0) - This does not work
However if I do =vlookup("*"&A1&"*",Sheet2B:B,1,0) - This works but doesnot give me correct unique lookup result as a1 and b1 together is the unique id

    any other suggestions?

    Hi Robert,

Thank you for the quick response. I was trying to create a dummy spreadsheet to illustrate my question and found the problem myself.

    Thank You
