Wanting to create a unique customer number

Hi

I have a created a customer database spreadsheet, however I want each customer to have their own customer number eg. First four letters of Last Name or Company Name (if a company) and their first initial and number 1 going up from 1 from there.

I have no doubt that it can be done, I just don't know how? Any help would be appreciated
